Why I Endorse Eli Savit as Michigan Attorney General

Fellow advocates, community members, and Michiganders,

As someone who has spent decades advocating for justice, fairness, and the urgent need to transform our criminal legal system, I am proud to formally endorse Eli Savit for Michigan Attorney General. I am asking you to join me in this endorsement and to encourage everyone in your network to do the same. Michigan stands at a crossroads, and we need a leader who possesses both the intellectual depth to navigate our highest courts and the moral clarity to champion the rights of every citizen.

Eli Savit’s resume is exceptional, but it is his choice of how to use that expertise that truly sets him apart. He began his career as a public school teacher, has served as senior legal counsel for the City of Detroit, was an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan, and has clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Throughout his career, he has fought for civil rights, environmental justice, reproductive rights, voting rights, and workers’ rights.

One of Eli’s greatest strengths is understanding that true public safety is built on common sense and evidence-based best practices. As the Washtenaw County Prosecutor, he has demonstrated that we can prioritize the prosecution of serious, violent crimes while simultaneously addressing the root causes of lower level offenses through mental health and substance-use treatment. He has also shown the courage to acknowledge when the system gets it wrong, and to act accordingly.

Eli’s vision is forward-looking and socially conscious, yet it appeals to a broad spectrum of Michiganders. Whether you are a progressive focused on equity or a conservative focused on fiscal responsibiity and the rule of law, his record proves that public safety and criminal legal reform are deeply intertwined and not mutually exclusive.

In a time when our constitutional rights are under siege and the criminal legal system continues to disproportionately harm Black, Brown, and poor communities, we need an Attorney General who will not flinch in the face of injustice. We need someone who will fight for all Michiganders, not just the powerful and connected. Eli is that person.
